This book is a Golden Jubilee commemorative volume of the National Metallurgical Laboratory. Jamshedpur and a joint venture of India International Publisher, New Delhi. The culture of every nation derives strength and vitality from its traditions and achievements of the past. In metallurgy, we are heir to a great tradition. The iron pillars at Delhi and Dhar, the huge copper status of Buddha originally found at Sultanganj, the bronze statuette of dancing girl of Mohenjo-daro and the exquisite investment castings of south India are testimony to the art and science of Indian metallurgical tradition. These achievements continue to fascinate us even today. We, therefore, begin this volume with tributes to this unparalleled tradition from distinguished personalities who have researched in depth and contributed immensely towards the documentation of our heritage. Further, the period of the formal existence of the National Metallurgical Laboratory, for most purposes, coincides with the first fifty years of the Republic of India. It signifies the period over which a nation with a glorious past has tried to reassert itself after shaking off the yoke of centuries of foreign rule. The period is a tribute to the dreamers of modern India who struggled to lay the foundations and build the superstructures for the laboratories and enterprises for the promotion of science and technology. It is an era in which the Indian efforts in diverse branches of Science from agriculture to satellite technologies have made the country self reliant to a large extent. In all these endeavours, the community of metallurgists had a praiseworthy in several branches of the profession. In whatever emotive shades they may appear, these articles reflect the deep involvement and great pride of the new and enterprising metallurgists of a resurgent and buoyant India. This book encompasses two major parts : (I) Indian Metallurgical Heritage and (II) Metallurgy in Independent India. The part I comprises of nine broad and specialized articles.
